A Poem for Gary Indiana
Gary Indiana.
Chicago to the north and west,
Lake Michigan betwixt.
A company town with a backbone of steel,
Forged in the year Nineteen O’ Six.
Fifth Ave and Broad
Boasts thoroughfares wide.
Buildings tall and ornate
But there’s nothing inside.
Roofs gone to crumbling,
abandonment so thick you can see.
Folks leaving overgrown spaces,
Folks leaving overgrown spaces,
Empty edifices where merchants used to be.
Things breaking down,
Homes falling apart.
The streets are beginning to crack,
But the parade’s about to start.
From Indiana Dunes
All the way to Miller Beach,
There’s land to be had at a price that once seemed
Out of thought, out of mind,
And much out of reach.
Still there’s a flame burning,
and more than a ray of hope to be found.
Because deindustrialization and automation cannot knock down
a city built on solid ground.
So “Welcome to Gary”,
the sign proclaims.
You’re welcome to strengthen
the things that remain.
Remember that family vacation you took in the station wagon and you sat in the third row in the seat that faces out the back? Well, we make the bumper stickers that you would put on that gnarly ride....but maybe after you turned sixteen and you inherited it as your first car.
