The confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers
Is near the birthplace
of this City of Fountains
In the Heart of America.
Oregon, Santa Fe, California trails.
Nineteenth Century folk arriving,
riding in on rails.
Union Station booming
At the height of World War One.
Nine thousand blood red poppies
In the poppy field.
Under a glass bridge.
Gleaming in the sun.
Kansas City, Missouri
Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit,
18th and Vine, Overland Park
The District of Power and Light after dark.
Kansas City, Kansas City
How indeedly unique are you.
Where one can find massive books,
giant shuttlecocks,
And slow-smoked barbecue.
Remember that family vacation you took in the station wagon and you sat in the third row in the seat that faces out the back? Well, we make the bumper stickers that you would put on that gnarly ride....but maybe after you turned sixteen and you inherited it as your first car.
