A Poem for Youngstown Ohio by Todd
At the end of every street in Youngstown, Ohio
There’s a mill.
They are ghostly reminders that make no sound
Yet still they haunt the shell of this Mahoning River town.
Blast furnace blazing
hotter than you can stand
Steel man working
like he got five hands.
The war it now is over
But the price of peace is steep.
Blood spilt on the battlefield
Heartache fills the Youngstown streets.
From Youngstown Sheet to Republic Steel
The work was hard but it paid for a meal.
Now they’ve vanished like smoke from a stack
The suits went home one day
and they never came back.
Black Monday was the day
You thought it had all bottomed out.
But Youngstown went right on bleeding
beyond the shadow of a doubt.
Midway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh
Is where Youngstown used to be.
Yet it remains.
And this scrap iron town
Is ready
And waiting
And worthy
To rise once again.
And God only knows what time it is when.
